The FAO/INFOODS Global Food Composition Database for Pulses (uPulses) provides nutrient values for pulses, a subgroup of legumes that includes dry edible seeds with low fat content. The majority of data are analytical data complemented by data from other published sources covering data for foods in raw and processed forms on proximates, minerals, vitamins, phytate, amino acids and fatty acids fractions. The data compilation process followed standards and guidelines outlined by FAO/INFOODS, and the species were selected based on the importance of the pulse and the available data. Emphasize is put on nutrient variations among different species, varieties and origin. The data are available in Excel format alongside with a comprehensive documentation in PDF format at: http://www.fao.org/infoods/infoods/tables-and-databases/faoinfoods-databases/en/

Kindly be informed that a new FAO technical paper “Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems: Processes and Practices in the High Seas”, is now available on-line.
This publication on” Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems: Processes and Practices in the High Seas” catalogues the achievements that have been made since 2006 on the identification and protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) from significant adverse impacts caused by fishing with bottom contact gears in the high seas. It is a consolidated output of the FAO VME Portal and DataBase (www.fao.org/in-action/vulnerable-marine-ecosystems/en/), which was requested by the UNGA in Resolution 61/105 (Paragraph 90) to support States and regional fisheries management organisations and arrangements (RFMO/As) in protecting VMEs.
The publication provides regional fisheries management bodies, States, and other interested parties with a summary of existing regional measures to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems from significant adverse impacts caused by deep-sea fisheries using bottom contact gears in the high seas. It compiles and summarizes information on the processes and practices of the regional fishery management bodies, with mandates to manage deep-sea fisheries in the high seas, to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems.
The publication includes a chapter on the Western Central Atlantic Ocean, the mandate area of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC).

The Report of the 16th session of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC) is now available on-line.
The Sixteenth Session of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission was held in Guadeloupe, France, from 20 to 24 June 2016. The session was attended by 28 members of the Commission. Observers from four Regional Fishery Bodies (RFBs) and four intergovernmental organizations also participated.
The Commission adopted five regional fisheries management recommendations respectively on: 1) the regional plan for the management and conservation of Queen conch, 2) spiny lobster management and conservation, 3) the sub-regional fisheries management plan for flyingfish, 4) the management of deep sea fisheries in the high seas, and 5) the management of shrimp and groundfish resources. The Commission also adopted two resolutions on: 1) sea cucumber fisheries management and aquaculture, and 2) Marine Protected Areas as fisheries management tool in the Caribbean.
The Commission agreed to launch a process to establish a Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO) in the WECAFC area of competence, being the Western Central Atlantic (area 31) and the Northern part of the South West Atlantic (area 41) and to collaborate in fisheries management and conservation in the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) of straddling stocks, deep sea fish stocks and highly migratory species that are not under the mandate of ICCAT. The Commission discussed intersessional activities of Working Groups and regional collaboration in addressing Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing, and approved the Programme of Work (2016–17).

Chefs For Development: The Role of Chefs in Linking Agriculture to Tourism in the South Pacific
By Robert Oliver and Dr Tracy Berno. CTA, 2016.
The coastal and inland fisheries, tropical climate and fertile soils of South Pacific nations support the production of fresh ingredients that are healthy, nutritious and vitamin rich. Although traditional Pacific cuisine based on these fresh local ingredients is alive and well in the homes of Pacific Islanders, much of the food served in the tourism industry is imported and fails to deliver an authentic South Pacific cuisine experience to visitors. Many Pacific tourism menus are based on Western-style dishes which require the importation of significant amounts of food from overseas (estimated to comprise up to 80-90% of food consumed in some tourism operations for example). Some menus do offer 'Pacific food'. For the most part this cuisine is often inauthentic and reflects what has come to be expected as Pacific Island 'tourism food' at themed island-night events, and is more often than not a mere parody of traditional foods. This is a lost opportunity for both the countries of the South Pacific and the visitors they host.

Climate Change and moreso Climate Variability, are thematic areas of paramount concern for the Caribbean Region. These concerns have been focused on high impact extreme weather events, to which the agricultural sector is extremely vulnerable. It's vulnerability is predicated on the fact that the majority of agricultural production in the Region is open field, susceptible to natural hazards such as hurricanes, flooding and drought and dependent on rainfall, being also characterized as 'rain-fed agriculture'. Based on current experiences and climate models for the future, the emerging Caribbean context is that of increased risk towards natural hazards and reduced water availability for agriculture based on increasingly variable rainfall patterns.

The Caribbean accounts for seven of the world’s top 36 water-stressed countries. Barbados is in the top ten. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) defines countries like Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Kitts and Nevis as water-scarce with less than 1000 m3 freshwater resources per capita. The predominant practice of rainfed agricultural production means the region is vulnerable to the very variable and unpredictable rainfall.
This report reviews information on drought characteristics and management in the Caribbean region, identifies the relevant national and regional agencies and focal points involved in drought management, and brings together information on their work at national and regional level.

This Feature highlights the importance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in agriculture in the Caribbean, and the role that they play in the development process. It recognises that in spite of their initiative, self investment and hard work, small agriculture based business owners do face challenges. It urges ‘policy’ to understand core needs and create the framework necessary for MSMEs to survive, thrive and inspire a new crop of agricultural enterprises.

This report explores the different types and functionality of e-commerce platforms and evaluates key lessons learnt in different regions. It examines the potential motivation and benefits of key partners and users, and considers practical factors for engagement and deployment addressing relevant generic as well as Caribbean specific challenges. Finally, this report presents a potential approach, including a team structure, indicative costs and timeline required to establish a functional, sustainable Pan-Caribbean e-platform that could facilitate Producers and High Value Market (HVM) buyers in establishing wider trade for Fresh Produce in the Caribbean. However, this would require substantial up-front investment from donors, an appetite for risk and a long-term financial and personnel commitment in what is a highly fragmented sector.

Caribbean agriculture consisted of the production and export of traditional bulk commodities, notably bananas and sugar, as well as rice, coffee and cocoa.
This activity was based on preferential trade arrangements with the European Union, under the Lomé Conventions and The Cotonou Agreement. With the removal of preferential access based on quotas for traditional crops and other reforms to the EU’s trading policies, as well as the increased pressure of globalization, Caribbean agriculture has struggled to compete internationally, and has experienced considerable reductions in the production of crops for local consumption as well.
Agriculture is also a key source of employment in many Caribbean countries, accounting for approximately 16% of the overall employment in the region — 30% in Guyana, 25% in Dominica, 20% in St.Lucia, and 18% in Jamaica.
Continued decline in agriculture will therefore have significant impacts on the economic and social viability of rural communities; and if left unchecked, will likely result in deterioration of real incomes and an increase in poverty rates in rural communities.

The CARICOM agricultural sector is characterized by a combination of
small and medium-scale enterprises both at the primary and secondary
stages of production. The historical domination of the sector by
plantation export agriculture has all but disappeared in some countries
but retains its significance in a select number. The bulk of the sector
consists of highly diversified, mainly domestic-oriented enterprises

The CARICOM Fresh and Processed Market Opportunity Study was conducted during March and April 2009. The methodology used included desk research on production and trade databases, review of recent fresh and processed produce industry studies and field visits and interviews. The quality and reliability of the available production and trade data posed some limitations on the analysis. However, all attempts were made to validate the existing data and to ensure that the conclusions arrived at were in line with observed industry trends.
This report documents the findings of the CARICOM (Excluding Haiti and the Dominican Republicion,gs of the market opportunity study for fresh and processed produce) Market Opportunity Study. The study was undertaken to identify the 5 national and / or regional agri-food value chains, which will become pilot projects for support by FAO with the objective of becoming demonstration models to catalyse further adoption across the region, demonstrating private sector led, value chain approaches to reduce rural poverty and enhance national and regional food security.
